Can I Claim AI-Assisted Written Content as My Own?
This author’s conscience crisis about using AI editing tools. Mine or ours. A writing experiment.
“It must be 100% yours.”
That’s what one of my favorite publications told me. So I decided to write, without assistance, in my Notes app. I’ll present you with the same work that has been done through my AI writing and editing assistance tools. After that, I’ll let you decide whether I can claim both as mine.
Ours
The article lunged towards me and trapped my neck. My head fell back inhumanly. Its words were digging into my voice box. The pressure ignited nerves that caused my mind to explode with thoughts meant to peel back its dreadful fingers. My eyes squeezed shut, and tears of letters leaked out.
Over the loudspeaker, Illumination says, “… we offer those who invested in AI tools and want to use them to grow their audience responsibly…
L A M P S H A D E!”The last word reverberated through me. I felt the hands of the editors push me back into the hall outside the hallowed spaces for purist writers only.
The door slammed so hard I felt a rush of wind blow angrily against my face; it forced my eyes shut momentarily. A wave of panic ensued. My body moved urgently back to to the door, my hands fumbling to find the doorknob.
In alarm, I see no device to open the door now — I may not enter again.

The last word reverberated as my body was swept up and backward. It was slowly lowered to my feet in the hall outside the hallowed annals of purist writers. With Grammarly incorporated, I generate my stories within Jasper.ai. After I created the piece, I used prowritingaid.com to enhance its readability. Then I use

to reduce my word count or help me generate SEO titles. My work is not without them, and my work is not without me.
When I use these tools, I cite them for full disclosure.
This precludes me from certain publications now. So I request Lampshade enlist us as a quartet of one writer, understanding suddenly how the four characters in Vengeance can be a single entity.
I remain sad, though.

In My Own Opinion
I depend on my AI for its helpful grammar and comprehension tips. I’m proud of the work I create through collaboration with AI and accept it as my own.
When I create a sentence, my tool gives me a suggested rephrasing that I accept wholesale or sometimes adjust. I choose, select, edit and reject.
It is mine.

The Soundtrack
🎶 You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give
Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you
… Tell me where else can I turn
’Cause, you’re the one I depend upon 🎶
